Get hands-on training during this 5 day RYA Competent Crew course. Our RYA certified and highly skilled instructors will introduce you to the world of sailing. After completion of this course you will be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines a crew member has to do.
Sea terms and Boat Part
Learning the language of sailing is a major part of learning to sail. You’ll become familiarized with fundamental nautical terms and all the critical parts of a yacht and their functionality.
Rigging and Managing Sails
Learn practical rigging and sail work during the RYA Competent Crew Course, understand sail selection, sail trim and reefing.
Sailing Etiquette
Beginning sailors will learn basic sailing etiquette, such as the rules of the road.
Ropework
Basic ropework and fundamental knots are important skills for every sailor, even beginners.
Man Overboard Handeling
Learn what to do in a man-overboard situation and learn how to avoid the dangerous situation altogether.
Emergency Equipment
Learn how to operate distress flares, life rafts, and the importance of other safety equipment onboard.
Emergency Equipment
You will learn how to prevent fires at sea and what to do in the unlikely case that one happens on board.
Handling Seasickness
Even the most experienced sailors sometimes suffer from seasickness. You’ll learn tricks of the trade to help you prevent seasickness and to better handle the uncomfortable phenomenon.
Helmsmanship
Get comfortable taking a watch while learning to steer, trim the sails, steer a compass course, operate the yacht under sail and under motor, and other practical sailing skills.
Crew Communication
As you learn more onboard duties, you’ll also learn how to work well as a team while having a fantastic time with your yachtmates.
General Duties
There is always something to do on a yacht. While spending days onboard, you’ll get an introduction to the many tasks and responsibilities of crewing a sailing voyage
Meteorology
RYA Competent Crew teaches basic weather forecasting, the Beaufort Scale, and how to map a course while keeping the weather conditions in mind.

Get started with this 2 day RYA Start Yachting course in the beautiful Ibiza, on a brand new 2022 Dufour Grand Large 390
This hands on training is perfect to be introduced to the world of sailing. At Helmsmen Academy we pride ourselves in having highly skilled, experienced, and RYA certified sailing instructors, who will show you the essential knowledge about what is means to be a crew member, and the anatomy of a sailboat. Our brand new 2022 Dufour Grand Large 390 is moored in the stunning Marina Santa Eulalia, with beautiful coves nearby, surrounded by crystal clear water in the Mediterranean Sea.
The RYA Competent Crew course takes 5 days to complete. After each day we will come back to our mooring spot in the Marina Santa Eulalia, and you will be able to either stay onboard, or you can explore the beautiful Island Ibiza.
Duration
No experience required. It can be helpful, if you already had some experience on a sailboat, or took part in the RYA Start Yachting course, however, don't worry if you're a novice. At Helmsmen Academy, we will teach you everything you need to know to become an active crew member.
Experience Required
At Helmsmen Academy, the RYA Start Yachting course takes place in the beautiful Ibiza. Depending on the time of the year, recommend to bring the following: Waterproof Clothing, Sunhat & Sun blocker & Sunglasses (Summer), Wind jacket & trousers (please check with us, we have some in our sailing school).
What to Bring
Itinerary
The course begins at 10 a.m. and should be completed by 6 p.m. on every day.
You will learn topics such as:
Passage planning, preparing for being out in the sea, pilotage, how to do a passage, how to handle a yacht under power as well as sail, how different weather conditions can impact the sailing and how to handle these, how to handle emergency situations
