The participant also needs to be in a physical shape that allows the participant to be able to take part in all the sailing exercises.
Experience Required
At Helmsmen Academy, the RYA Start Yachting course takes place in the beautiful Ibiza. Depending on the time of the year, recommend to bring the following: Waterproof Clothing, Sunhat & Sun blocker & Sunglasses (Summer), Wind jacket & trousers (please check with us, we have some in our sailing school).
What to Bring
Itinerary
The course begins at 10 a.m. and should be completed by 6 p.m. on every day.
You will learn topics such as:
Passage planning, preparing for being out in the sea, pilotage, how to do a passage, how to handle a yacht under power as well as sail, how different weather conditions can impact the sailing and how to handle these, how to handle emergency situations.

Learn how to maintain the deck for efficient sailing and how to properly delegate tasks to crew members. You will also learn the valuable skills of sail trimming and develop an understanding of the efficient use of sails.
Pilotage

You’ll learn more in-depth, advanced navigation skills to extend the knowledge learned in previous RYA course.
Yatch Handling
It's important for the skipper to be able to handle the yacht in every circumstance, whether at sea under full sail or while under power during berthing
Maintenance and Repair
Maintaining the electrical and mechanical systems onboard is important for every skipper. You’ll increase your maintenance and repair skills during this hands-on course.
Handling Emergencies
The skipper must be in charge during emergency situations. Learn how to handle the most common emergencies that can happen onboard.
Engines
Learn how to properly maintain and operate the engine.
Rules of the Road
Receive more advanced skills about weather mapping and planning a passage with critical weather scenarios in mind.
